MEET THE BAND

MARK MCCAIN has been with us since the theater started. Father of three, and grandfather of five, Mark started playing guitar in the second grade and began lessons in the third. Heavily influenced by his father's appreciation of guitarists like Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Andrés Segovia, as well as various pop, Brazilian, and classical styles, this allowed Mark to stylistically diversify at a young age. Jazz and big band became a love upon auditioning for and entering the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in the school's early years before they had a dedicated guitar program. As an adult, after many musical theater, contemporary jazz, big band, bluegrass, church, and other opportunities, Mark eventually founded the unique guitar/cello duo named "Touch the Strings" with Houston Grand Opera cellist, Erika Johnson, and began composing, arranging, and producing and performing unique steel-string fingerstyle infused music, which one orchestra conductor suggested might be called "chamber folk" – lacking any standard genre classifications that could describe this duo’s style. You can find Touch the Strings on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, and most other streaming platforms by searching for "Touch the Strings - the Guitar and Cello of Mark McCain and Erika Johnson." These days, Mark spends most of his musical time honing the guitar, mandolin, Dobro, banjo, guitar synthesizer, and pedal steel chops required by the wide variety of music you hear at this theater, and enjoying semi-retirement with his lovely wife, Cindy. Don’t ask him how many instruments he owns – he will probably blush..

ARTHUR GILLIGAN

AUSTIN BIEL

LONG LE

MARK MCCAIN
ARTHUR GILLIGAN grew up in Rio de Janiero, Brazil where he attended the Villa-Lobos School of Music. In 2015, Mr. Gilligan relocated to Houston and received an Associate of Arts degree from San Jacinto College. He then transferred to the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Music Education, a master’s degree in Percussion Performance with a Teaching Assistantship, and is currently completing a DMA with a fellowship. Mr. Gilligan performed with the TCCBDA All-State Jazz Ensemble in 2017, received the Clara Freshour Nelson Scholarship, and was section leader for the Moores School Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. He collaborates regularly with notable Houston-area organizations such as the Texas Music Festival and DACAMERA. In addition to performing with The Music Box Theater and other Houston-based outfits, Mr. Gilligan also teaches at San Jacinto College, HSPVA, and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.
AUSTIN BIEL is a grandfather of 7, father of 3 and husband of 1, Austin divides his time between music and family. Before joining TMBT, Austin toured extensively as a musician, sharing the stage with dozens of artists including Al Jarreau, Yolanda Adams, Ron Kenoly and Donnie McClurkin. 100’s of recording sessions as a producer and session player led to releasing a dozen albums of his own music over the years (austinbiel.com). When not on stage with Music Box, he is producing in his studio @colors (austinmakesmusic.com), teaching private students all over the world (austinteachesmusic.com), playing at various churches in the area, and hustling hapless ping-pong players.
LONG LE is a talented bass guitarist born and raised in Houston, Texas. From his early days he studied classical music for the double bass and now holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Sam Houston State University and a Master of Music in Performance from the University of Houston. He began digging into the Houston music scene and performed with many ensembles as a freelance musician. Long has been drawn to that deep, resonant low end that anchors every great performance. His smooth, rhythmic style weaves together the heartbeat of each song—from funk and soul to rock and jazz—earning him a reputation for groove and versatility. He's been with the Music Box Theater since it's first downbeat. Each weekend, Long brings the Music Box Theater to life as the house bass player, where his tight pocket and lively improvisations set the stage for both emerging and established artists. His ability to read a room and deliver just the right groove makes him a fixture of Houston’s vibrant live‑music culture. Offstage, Long is a dedicated educator. He offers private bass lessons throughout the city—visiting local school orchestra programs all over Houston. His students range from enthusiastic beginners to advanced players seeking deeper mastery. With a passion for performance and pedagogy, Long Le is shaping Houston’s musical future—one weekend gig and one private lesson at a time. He also teaches private bass lessons at schools across Houston, sharing his passion and expertise with the next generation of musicians.
